Taupata Interactive
Taupata is an independent game development studio based in Christchurch, New Zealand. The studio focuses on creating interactive experiences built around robust systems, clear mechanics, and technically grounded design. Our development approach emphasises the underlying systems that shape player experience. Rather than relying on scripted sequences or heavily authored gameplay, our projects aim to create environments where behaviour emerges naturally from the interaction of mechanics, simulation, and player decision making.
Technical Systems Focus
Much of the studio’s work centres on simulation-driven design. This includes areas such as AI behaviour, dynamic mission generation, and the modelling of complex mechanical systems. These systems are developed with the goal of producing gameplay that remains consistent, understandable, and responsive over long play sessions. From a technical perspective, development is primarily carried out in C++ using Unreal Engine, with a focus on building tools and frameworks that support iterative experimentation and long-term project stability.
A Small Team
Taupata is currently a small studio and most development is carried out independently, with additional collaboration when required for specialised areas such as art production. We believe that small teams are capable of great things and rapid development so long as there is a focus on creating efficient underlying development tools.
Founder
Taupata was founded by Josh Jamieson, a developer based in New Zealand with a background in software development, digital media production, and law.
